7/14/2023 0 Comments Zankou chicken west hollywoodPerhaps it was my fault for ordering in the middle of the afternoon. It was as if they had left it under a heat lamp for hours. And the ultimate insult was that there was no garlic flavor at all in the chicken. Nicely browned, but tough and dry throughout. And finally, the star of the meal… the half chicken. The hummus was fine, and reminiscent of what I had enjoyed in years past. The tomato and lettuce salad might have been good, except there was no dressing at all…none, zilch, nada. Maybe this “Arabic Bread” had traveled too far from its bakery in Santa Ana. The pita bread was kind of old and the staff was too lazy to wrap it in the usual tin foil – instead they left it in the plastic vendor’s packaging. Observations: the little garlic spread cup was still being offered and it was excellent. Anyway, as soon as I got home, I dove in to the bag. I could have been transporting cement in my car. I ordered the half chicken platter and expected to be overwhelmed in the car by the garlicky aroma I remembered. Maybe it was just a one-off, but I have my doubts. And I have always recommended Zankou to friends, even though I hadn’t been there in a long time. remembering the delicious, melt in your mouth chicken from years past. I immediately decided to get some take-out, fondly. However, I was in the Hollywood area today and spotted Zankou. I had not been to one of the Zankou restaurants for over 5 years because the closest one is still too far from where I live. I’m recommending Zankou for diners on a budget who don’t want to compromise on flavor, quality, and freshness. My friends also tell me that their tarna and shawarma are some of the best that they’ve ever had. The menu is small, but full of delicious options. If you’re really hungry, try a cabbage salad or some sarna (like dolmas), or some muttabal (like baba gahnoush). Don’t forget to ask for garlic sauce (vegan and gf). The hummus that comes with the falafel plate is creamy and thick, and you get plenty of delicious pickled turnips. Even without pita, you get a very filling meal for under $10! If you’re like me and are gluten intolerant, you can get a falafel plate without pita - just say that you’re “allergic” to wheat and need the kitchen staff to change to fresh gloves before making your salad (they handle the pitas and can cross contaminate your salad otherwise). perfectly seasoned, and gluten free (both in terms of ingredients and because they’re not made in a shared fryer with gluten-containing foods). The falafel are my favorite in LA - huge, crispy. While the food is inexpensive, it is also absolutely delicious. If you judge Zankou Chicken by the appearance of this location, you will most likely assume that you’re dealing with some unexciting cheap fast food. While the chicken was tasty enough, it was no better than the chicken I can get at my local Pollo Rico for $7.99, which includes a fountain drink!Īpparently Zankou Chicken has a nickname of "Murder Chicken" (look it up.) For me, the crime was in over-charging me and then serving me chicken that's no better than what you can get at any fast food chicken joint. But, based on her rave reviews, I figured that the chicken might actually be worth the price. Then, the menu at the counter listed a price of $6.99 for the "Quarter of White Meat Chicken", but when I got my CC receipt, I saw that they had charged me $9.99 (an increase of nearly 50%!) Had I been eating by myself, I certainly would have gone back to get a refund of the difference, but since I was there with a friend who had recommended the place, I thought it might be embarrassing to her, so I didn't do it. The restaurant itself was unimpressive and the folks working the counter were less-than-friendly, so.
